64 dogs are recovering after being rescued from unfit conditions in Barnes County.

Court records show Karl and Ginger Helland of Kathryn, North Dakota are both facing a misdemeanor animal neglect charge in the case.

These dogs have had a make-shift home at the Valley City Winter Show building since last week thanks to Prairie Paws Rescue

Rebekah Johnson, co-founder of Prairie Paws Rescue, said volunteers are desperately needed.

"Usually we get a lot of volunteers right away at the beginning of these types of events, then they start to dwindle off,” Johnson said. “We need people throughout the next two months because that’s how long we could have them.”

On Tuesday, a veterinarian gave the dogs an overall wellness check.

Barnes County Sheriff’s Office said they had no comment regarding this open investigation.

Ginger Helland was found not guilty of a similar charge in 2014.
