1 dead in plane crash in southeastern South Dakota

SALEM, S.D. (AP) One person is dead after a small plane crashed in southeastern South Dakota. It happened Sunday afternoon near the town of Salem, which is about 45 miles northwest of Sioux Falls.

KSFY-TV reports the pilot of the single-engine plane was having health issues during the trip. Air traffic controllers told the pilot to circle around the area until he could land, but lost contact with him.

The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified.
