21-year-old woman dies after being thrown from rope jump bridge without harness
(Gray News) - A woman fell to her death after staff allegedly forgot to attach a safety cord before she rope jumped from a bridge in Brazil.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, was going rope jumping Saturday at Ponte do Esqueleto, an abandoned bridge where tourists practice extreme sports.
Rope jumping is an extreme sport that differs from bungee jumping in the type of cord used and the resulting motion of the fall.
A video posted on social media showed the moment that Freitas was carried by staff members toward the edge of the bridge and thrown over while wearing a helmet.
After she fell, a witness filming pointed to the rope left behind on the ground and shouted, “Guys, the rope!”
She fell 130 feet to her death.

Shortly before the accident, de Freitas posted an image of the site on Instagram captioned: “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge???,” CBS reported.
Maria’s mom, Valdenia Rodrigue posted a tribute on social media saying, “I wanted to hug you more than a thousand times. Love you forever my princess, and thank you for being part of my life during these 21 years.”
Police in Brazil have arrested three men who worked for the company offering rope jumps over the young woman’s death.
Officials have also initiated an investigation that could lead to murder charges.
