FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - While the hits come and go, the Bison Softball team has found a steady force in the pitching circle. Paige Vargas is in the middle of another incredible campaign with North Dakota State, earning 13 wins already this season. She also leads the team in strikeouts with 126, nearly 100 more than anyone else on the roster, along with another team high 2.06 ERA.

“Just being a senior and taking it all in, not knowing about a COVID year yet, I’m just really enjoying every moment I can.” Vargas said on this season so far, “I think me, Darren, and all the other pitchers have a good bond and connection.”

This is nothing new for Vargas who stormed on to the Summit League Scene in 2019. That season she was named second team all-Summit League and the MVP of the Conference Championship tournament. Despite the accolades that came early in her career here at NDSU... Vargas has some unfinished business during what is, statistically speaking, her best season thus far.

“I think she’s just come into her own, kind of matured as a pitcher as well.” Head Coach Darren Mueller said. “She just has really good control and command of her pitches. Since day one this fall, she’s had a great attitude and just really working hard. I’m just proud of where she’s at at this point.”

The Bison Softball team has a proud history of Ace Pitchers, a group that Vargas certainly has an opportunity to join.

“She’s someone that you can put into that list of some of the great pitchers we’ve had here.” Mueller said. “I think that’s something she can still build on the rest of the year. Proud of her for that aspect and just the relationship and things she’s done for our program, it’s pretty cool to see.”

Vargas added that “He always tells me about past pitchers and their accomplishments of what they went through. Darren will always tell me stories about that because he knows I can be that. It does feel good and hopefully we’ll see that the rest of the season goes the way we want it to, but yeah we’ll see.”

Vargas’ numbers don’t just lead the Bison, she is also third in the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA. Now she hopes her arm can help bring the Bison back to the top of the summit league standings.
