North Dakota State Wins Homecoming Game 34-20 Over Northern Iowa

FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Quincy Patterson accounted for four touchdowns on offense and fifth-ranked North Dakota State’s defense recorded five sacks in a 34-20 victory over No. 12 Northern Iowa on Saturday, Oct. 9, before a crowd of 18,536 at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. Christian Watson caught five passes for a career-high 163 yards including an 85-yard touchdown from Patterson to open the scoring midway through the first quarter. Patterson finished 11 of 21 passing for 182 yards and two TDs. North Dakota State (5-0, 2-0 MVFC) led 13-10 at halftime after a pair of field goals by Jake Reinholz from 27 and 22 yards, and the Bison used a pair of big plays on defense and special teams early in the third quarter to set up their next score. UNI (3-2, 1-1 MVFC) opened the second half with a 1-yard loss, false start, incompletion and sack to face fourth and 25 from their own 10. NDSU punt returner Jayden Price went 41 yards to the UNI 9, and Patterson scored two plays later from the four behind a surge from the Bison offensive line.

Will Mostaert’s sack fumble on the second play of UNI’s next drive was recovered by NDSU’s Costner Ching at the UNI 21, and the Bison scored four plays later when Patterson found wide open tight end Noah Gindorff on a 3-yard pass. Reinholz’s PAT kick made it a 27-10 game.

Cole Wisniewski, Logan McCormick, Lane Tucker and Javier Derritt each added sacks for the Bison, and linebacker Jackson Hankey made a game-high 11 tackles.

UNI quarterback Theo Day was 12 of 31 passing for 257 yards, including a 44-yard TD pass to Isaiah Weston early in the second quarter. Weston finished with five catches for 181 yards. The Panthers had four players combine for 124 yards rushing led by Bradrick Shaw’s 44 yards on 10 carries.

Patterson carried 12 times for 60 yards and two scores as NDSU had seven rushers combine for 181 yards on the ground.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play at Illinois State next Saturday, Oct. 16. The Redbirds will be coming off a bye 10/12/21, 2:47 PM.
