Man sentenced for killing, beheading bear in northern Minnesota
RED LAKE, Minn. (Valley News Live) - A Brainerd, Minnesota man will spend over a year in jail after killing and beheading a 700-pound bear in northern Minnesota.
Prosecutors say 39-year-old James Stimac isn’t a tribal member and entered the Red Lake Indian Reservation without permission in 2019. He used a compound bow to kill the bear.
Stimac went back to the reservation the next day and posed for photos with the animal. He couldn’t move the bear because of it’s size, so he used a saw to remove its head as a trophy.
U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson sentenced Stimac to 15 months in prison.
