#17 UC Irvine Defeats NDSU Baseball in NCAA Regional
STANFORD, Calif. (NDSU Athletics) - The record-breaking season for the North Dakota State baseball team came to a close on Sunday, as 17th-ranked UC Irvine beat the Bison 18-3 in an elimination game at the NCAA Regional at the Sunken Diamond.
NDSU finished the season 42-19, setting school records for most victories and games played. The Anteaters improved to 42-17, advancing to Sunday night’s regional championship game against seventh-ranked Stanford (35-14).
Bennett Hostetler led the Bison with three hits, while Jake Malec added a pair. Zach Solano and Jack Simonsen also had hits for the Bison. Evan Sankey suffered the loss on the mound, as he dropped to 7-3 in 1.2 innings of work. Sankey allowed eight runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking two out. Jake Drew earned a strikeout, while Tristen Roehrich struck out a pair.
Malec broke the single-season record for at-bats with 247, while Peter Brookshaw moved into fourth with 224 on the year. Malec also moved into fifth in school history with 60 runs scored. Hostetler moved into second on the single-season hits list with 84, while moving into a tie for fourth with 19 stolen bases on the year. Drew’s appearance was his 22nd of the year, tied for the fifth most in school history. Sankey became the 10th player in program history to record 70 or more strikeouts in a season.
Tucker Rohde became the sixth player in school history to appear in 200 career games, while he moved into eighth in career starts with 182. Hostetler moved into a tie for eighth with 35 career stolen bases.
The Anteaters scored five runs in the first and four in the second, adding a pair of home runs in each inning. UC Irvine also scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to take a 13-0 lead. The Bison scored in the eighth as Hostetler singled to left field to drive in Malec. After five more Anteater runs in the ninth, Hunter Koep reached on an error that allowed Joey Danielson and Garret Hill to score.
