FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - Update: The statue of Jesus in front of the St. Mary’s Cathedral has been cleaned of the black paint on His face. The Fargo Catholic Diocese says that they did not clean it but noticed that the paint was gone. A statue of Jesus welcoming people into St. Mary’s Cathedral in downtown Fargo now has a big spot of black paint on His face.

A picture of Christ’s face covered in black paint in front of the church is circulating on social media, with hundreds of comments and even more shares, many outraged.

The Fargo Catholic Diocese says the vandalism happened sometime between Friday, April 16 and Saturday April 17.

The Diocese also tells Valley News Live the white marble statue of Jesus came from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in 2018, and now crews are looking at ways or restoring the piece.

A spokesperson for the church says they are praying for the individual(s) involved and they hope the suspect(s) will ‘someday have an encounter with the face of Christ themselves.’

Fargo Police are investigating the incident but are not commenting on anything further.
