Dogs Becoming Sick at Area Dog Parks

Posted: Updated:
A growing number of dogs in the community are coming down with a strange illness after visiting dog parks around the FM area. After we received a call from a viewer, Valley News Live checked out a few of the dog parks to see what's got pet owners concerned.

A number of members of the facebook group 'Fargo's Best Dog Park Club' report their pets coming down with a strange illness.

"Most of the dogs that were getting sick were having diarrhea and vomiting issues," said Homeward Animal Shelter Manager Heather Clyde.

Clyde said she has not heard of anything serious being reported but that does not mean it's not going around. She cautions that if you plan to take your pet to the park it should be vaccinated and you should be aware of a few health risks.

"Some kind of intestinal parasite, you know coccidia, giardia, even like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms," said Clyde.

Those potential health risks are in the back of the mind of lifelong dog lover Tori Kennedy.

"It concerns me a little just because there's been a lot of concern and a lot of people talking about it which is good, I'm happy that everyone's communicating. But we don't have a lot of hard information," said Kennedy.

Valley News Live reached out to a number of veterinarians in the area and they said the same thing. Nothing serious was being reported to them. Kennedy said she will just err on the side of caution.

"I wouldn't want my dog to get sick, I'm a student so i prefer to play on the safe side," said Kennedy.

Clyde also said pet owners need to exercise their discretion if they want to take advantage of the holiday weekend and some fresh air with Fido.

"Its not a good idea to take your dog to the dog park right now. Maybe just hold off for a little while so that hopefully whatever it is will just dissipate over time," said Clyde.

The manager at Homeward Animal Shelter said many dog illnesses can be spread through close contact between animals. She said the best thing you can do for a sick dog is take them to the vet.
