Nickel Trophy Won't be in Play for Upcoming NDSU-UND Games

Posted: Updated:
At the center of the infamous UND-NDSU football rivalry stands the Nickel Trophy. With the news of the two teams meeting again in 2015 and 2019, many are wondering if the trophy will be up for grabs.

Sources at UND tell Valley News Live the Nickel Trophy will be retired as a historic representation of the series. So far, a new trophy has not been discussed between the two schools but we do know that the Nickel Trophy is no longer in play.

The trophy was inaugurated in 1938 and was presented each fall to the winner of the UND-NDSU football battle.  It is a 75-pound replica of a previously minted U.S. coin that measures in 2 inches thick, 22 inches in diameter, and is 250 times larger than a regular nickel.

UND has won the last three Nickel Trophy competitions, currently leading 35-30.
