A New Survey of Parents Say 12 Is The Perfect Age to Get First Cell Phone

Posted: Updated:
Parents think 12 is the appropriate age for a child to get his or her first phone, according to a new survey from American Express.

The American Express Spending & Savings Tracker this month focused on back-to-school spending trends, but had some interesting information on phones and other gadgets.

While tablets may be the new go-to for school, mom and dad understand smartphones are essential to safety and socializing, with 75% of parents who say they'll purchase a mobile phone for their child this year will choose a smartphone (vs. 69% in 2013).

The Ebiquity survey asked a random sample of 2,033 adults when they thought it was appropriate to buy their children a phone. Of the respondents, 64% said they would buy their child a phone between the ages of 10-14, 21% said 15-18, and 10% said younger than 10. On average though, 12 was the winning age.
