811 Day: Call Before You Dig

Posted: Updated:
Every six minutes an electrical line, gas line or some other buried utility line is hit and damaged.

Sometimes it's homeowners, other times it's contractors.

This is part of the reason why safety officials want you to remember to call 811 before you dig!

And fittingly, on this 11th day of August, officials from North Dakota One Call and the Public Service Commission are driving home the point to make sure you know where those lines are before you dig.

In fact, overr the past three years the PSC has fined 24 different companies for not doing so.

"We'll have people out there that don't want to call.  And they get in a hurry, they don't take the extra time to do it," Chairman of the Public Service Commission Brian Kalk said. "And of the fines that the Public Service Commission has levied, it's all been with companies."

The fines for not calling range up to $25,000.

And as for the utilities, Kalk said most will come and mark the buried lineswithing 48-hours of your call.
