Bail Set For Former Cass Co. Jail Nurse

Posted: Updated:

A Cass County judge set bail at $3,000 dollars on Wednesday for Claire Schwehr, a former Cass County Jail nurse. She is facing two felonies and a misdemeanor. According to court documents, Schwehr had sex with an inmate and smuggled in a cell phone, phone charger, beef jerky and tobacco earlier this year. The Cass County Jail maintains a zero tolerance policy regarding sexual contact between contract service providers, staff and the inmate population.

Cass County Prosecuting Attorney, Tristan Van De Streek, says Schwehr's cooperation and good behavior with the investigation helped them reach the bail amount. Van De Streek also says the prosecution filed a motion with the court to unseal a search warrant in connection with the case. The prosecution wants the names of cooperating inmates blacked out on the document due to safety concerns.

"The motions will show that we have concern obviously for the safety of cooperating witnesses. The sheriff keeps a very safe jail, has things under control," says Van De Streek. "But we want to do everything we can to make sure that there are no incidents as a result of inmates cooperation in the investigation."

Schwehr's defense attorney objected to the motion unsealing the warrant. Her preliminary hearing is set for September 6. If convicted, Schwehr faces multiple years behind bars and tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
