FARGO, N.D. -- Local firefighters are ramping up their response to crude oil fires like the one last December in Casselton with some specialized training.
The Fargo Fire Department is working with a Texas company, Specialized Response Solutions LP, on extinguishing the fires with foam.
BNSF has provided a special trailer for the training, and is also sending the regional hazmat team to a special training class this summer in Colorado.
"A fuel spill or a crude oil spill, like that one that happened in Casselton last winter is much larger than we are equipped for," said Capt. Ryan Vierguta of the Fargo Fire Department. "And, this new equipment gives us the fire power we need to combat that kind of problem."
This has been the third day of training for firefighters. The trailer holds 500 gallons of foam to douse oil spills, but can also be used for large structure and highway fires.
