DOT Issues New Regulations For Oil Trains

Posted: Updated:
The Department of Transportation is rolling out new regulations for oil trains in response to December’s fiery trail derailment in Casselton.

The DOT is phasing out use of older tanker cars that are more prone to puncture in the event of a derailment.

Trains using those older tankers must also move slower than 40 miles-per-hour in cities with more than 100,000 people, and under 50 miles-per-hour in rural areas.

And trains carrying at least one million gallons of Bakken crude will now have to notify emergency response commissions in the states where the train will travel.
