Grand Forks Police Officers Could Soon be Wearing Cameras

Posted: Updated:
Smile, you could soon be on camera if you're talking to a Grand Forks Police officer.  The city council will decide next week whether to approve the use of body-wear cameras for police.

Tiny cameras worn by police would document and record all conversations with people.  Police say it could be a useful tool in prosecuting cases and protecting officers from claims against them.

Lt. Mike Ferguson, Grand Forks Police: "To support what the officer says or does not say is very important."

Reporter: "It gives you another tool in the courtroom?"

Lt. Ferguson: "In the courtroom and even outside the courtroom. It can help the officer document an incident they're investigating."

The $45,000 dollar price tag for the body-wear camera system would be picked up by a federal grant.
