Tax Commissioner Candidate Wants More Tax Breaks

Posted: Updated:

The Democratic Candidate for Tax Commissioner in North Dakota wants to give a tax break to active duty soldiers, military retirees and senior citizens.

Jason Astrup proposed for soliders on active duty to not pay state income taxes. And,, he has the same idea for military retirement benefits, saying they shouldn't be taxed either.

"The fiscal impact of this policy is minor compared to the level of resources that are available in the state.  It would cost about $1.8 a year to exclude the retirement benefits from taxation.  And about 1$.9 a year to exclude the pay from active duty service members here in our state," Astrup said.

He says North Dakota is one of only eight states that tax military retirement benefits.

Astrup also proposed ending the state income tax on senior citizens.

Astrup will face Ryan Rauschenberger in the November election.
