Forum Communications has pulled the plug on the WDAZ 5:00 p.m. newscast. Grand Forks viewers will now see the WDAY 5pm newscast from Fargo instead of a show produced at WDAZ in Grand Forks.

A call today to WDAZ News Director Julie Moravchik was not returned but instead intercepted by former 5pm anchor Terry Dullum. Dullum told Valley News Live this morning that WDAY General Manager Mari Ossenfort was the only one who could speak on the change and that Moravchik had been asked to not comment. A call to Ossenfort was not returned.

Dullum wrote on his blog yesterday that "The decision was not made by anyone in Grand Forks. Certainly, not by me." He went on to say, "A long-time broadcaster said it best to me years ago. He said television will break your heart. Every time."

It is unclear if anyone will lose their jobs in the downsizing. However, sources tell Valley News Live that financial constraints have forced the elimination of up to twelve jobs across the entire Forum Communications business unit.

The reduction in newscasts brings down the total number of newscasts produced out of WDAZ to only 10 per week. WDAY also said during yesterday's newscast that they will not provide sports during the 5pm any more pushing the segment to 6pm and 10pm only. Valley News Live News Director Ike Walker said the elimination of the newscast is unfortunate. "It is unfortunate when viewers lose another outlet for local news, even if it is one of our competitors. Many stations often can't keep up with the financial pressure of providing good local content and unfortunately this is a trend that continues across the nation."

Valley News Live covers the northern valley everyday with multiple crews and is a competitor to WDAZ/WDAY.
