Becker County Eyes A Plan To Build A New, Modular Jail

Posted: Updated:
Becker County leaders are looking at the possibility of building a new modular jail after the Department of Corrections said the current facility needed upgrades to meet its standards.

A modular jail uses pre-constructed pods.

It’s a cheaper alternative to a traditional jail building and easier to expand.

The county has retained a consultant to look into the plan, and officials have already toured other jails in Douglas and Hennepin Counties.

To add to the problems, Hubbard County recently decided not to contract with Becker County to house overflow inmates.

The current jail was built 35 years ago on plans that it would last only 25 years.

The Becker County Administrator says the next big steps would be deciding on a location to put the building and finding funding to construct it.

Right now the county spends about $2 million a year in personnel costs.

The administrator says a new jail could save the county between $600,000-$700,000 a year.
