Polk County Fair Kicks Off In Fertile

Posted: Updated:
One of northwestern Minnesota’s most popular and longest running county fair’s is underway.  The Polk County Fair kicked off in Fertile.  It’s tough to find a bigger bang for your buck. Admission is free.

Dan Grunhovd, Polk County Fair: “Fertile is a small town. We’re only 900 people and we draw 40 to 50-thousand you know. I think it’s because we’re such a small town and the people feel like they’re coming home. We get ticket orders all year round from people all over the United States.”

One of the most popular exhibits at the fair is the petting zoo and it’s free. This year it features a new member, a camel named Tosha. And there are all kinds of animals here to get up close and personal with, including this baby goat, that was born just 30 minutes ago.

Girl: “They have to get used to you first. You work with them, petting them.”

Plus, 4-H Club members have been hard at work all year long getting their animals ready to show you.

Reporter: “What are you showing?”

Girl: “Sheep, pig, horse, dairy, beef.”

Girl: “We get to wash them and shear our sheep.”

Reporter: “Who’s this guy?”

Girl: “Buddy.”

Girl: “This will be my second year showing sheep. But, I’ve been in 4-H for a long time.”

…and besides the midway rides, there tons of tidbits to tempt your taste buds.

Reporter: “Uf dah tacos?”

Man: “Uf dah tacos.”

Reporter: “That’s good for dieters, isn’t it?”

Man: “Absolutely, ha, ha.”

The Polk County Fair runs through Sunday.
