George Walker of Miami, FL has been selected as an NBCC MFP Fellow.
(PRWEB) July 09, 2014
The NBCC Foundation, an affiliate of the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), recently selected George Walker of Miami, FL, for the National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program (NBCC MFP). As an NBCC MFP Fellow, Mr. Walker will receive funding and training to support his education and facilitate his service to underserved minority populations.
The NBCC MFP is made possible by a grant awarded to NBCC by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in August 2012. The Foundation is contracted by NBCC to administer the NBCC MFP, as well as training and collaboration activities, such as webinars, that are open to all National Certified Counselors. The goal of the program is to strengthen the infrastructure that engages diverse individuals in counseling and increases the number of professional counselors providing effective, culturally competent services to underserved populations.
The NBCC MFP will distribute $20,000 education awards to Mr. Walker and the 21 other doctoral-level counseling students selected to receive the fellowship award. George Walker is a graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Barry University in Miami, where he is also in the final year of his doctoral degree in mental health counseling. Mr. Walker is a licensed professional counselor and a National Certified Counselor (NCC). His clinical interests and experience includes extensive work with dual-diagnosed populations, working with inmates returning to the community and counselor supervision. Mr. Walker is interested in providing a strong multicultural perspective to future counselors by situating social justice as a core competence.
The Foundation plans to open the next NBCC MFP application period in November 2014. To learn more about the NBCC MFP and its fellows, please visit our website.
