Restaurant Report Card: Red River Valley Fair

Today, Valley News Live is taking Restaurant Report Card to the Red River Valley Fair.

Health inspectors were on the grounds yesterday and today to make sure food vendors are ready to safely sell all your fair favorites. 

Hot or cold, fresh or fried, all food vendors are being looked over by inspectors as this year's fair kicks off. Just like restaurants, all food stands need to be licensed, have the proper equipment and meet health codes. North Dakota Department of Health Environmental Health Practitioner Timothy Haak says the first thing he looks for is a clean environment and clean employees.

Westrum's Burger Stand is among many other food stands on the northwest side of the fairgrounds and came out without any violations.

"The customers are the most important, so we always try to do what's best for them," says the stand Manager Mirascosava Gesheva.

Just down the road, the Hot Dog Peddler met all requirements with food temperature, handling and storage, but received a non-critical violation for lights that were not shatter-proof or shielded. The owner said he'll remove them.

"If it's a critical violation, I usually like to see them corrected at the time of the inspection or soon afterwards. It's something that we try to get them to correct as soon as possible," says Haak.

Even if you meet all health standards, like Skip's Gourmet Grub, that doesn't mean you're in the clear the entire fair week.

"I'll be out here a couple hours or two, three hours several times during the week. Just walking around, observing food handling procedures and general cleanliness of the facilities," says Haak.

Haak says food should not be handled by vending staff with bare hands. If you question any of the food stands at the fair, he says you can file a report with the department of health online or give them a call at 701-328-1291.
