Wallingford, CT (PRWEB) July 08, 2014
Dr. Randy J. Greenberg, a dentist in Wallingford, CT, recently helped hundreds of people in the Galapagos repair their smiles during a dental mission trip in Ecuador. Dr. Greenberg headed the trip, which took place on Isabela Island, the largest island in the Galapagos. He led 4 other dentists, 9 dental students and 12 undergraduate students from the University of Connecticut in providing quality dental care to 250 underprivileged individuals.
While dental care is available in Ecuador, residents of the Galapagos Islands do not usually have the means to travel to the mainland in order to receive the care that they need. For them to do so, they would have to travel two and a half hours by boat and then take a two hour flight into Ecuador to reach the nearest dentist. That leaves the entire population of Isabela Island, around 2500 people, without a qualified dentist. The need for dental care was so great that people filled every available appointment and 50 more patients had to be turned away.
Dr. Greenberg and his team provided their patients with the best standard of care. Each patient they saw received one or more root canals, fillings or extractions. As a dentist in Wallingford, CT, he and his team were used to much better surroundings in which to perform these sensitive procedures. However, as this was not the first dental mission trip the doctor spearheaded, he knew exactly what to expect and how to handle each challenge they faced. The group set up a makeshift clinic that was fully stocked with donated supplies and equipment, including compressors, suction pumps, dental drills, an x-ray machine, computers and printers. Due to the complete lack of supplies on the island, each procedure the group performed was done with equipment and supplies that the team brought from the U.S. themselves.
