Detroit Lakes Native wins $200,000 Jackpot

One possible result of giving someone a fake $10,000 winning lottery ticket as a joke is that they might not believe you when you tell them you won a big prize. That’s what happened to Hope Adams of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, when she called her husband to tell him she had just won a $200,000 prize.

“I put a fake lottery ticket in his stocking last Christmas,” explained Adams. He realized that it was a joke “because I couldn’t stop laughing,” she said. “He wasn’t happy,” she added.

So when she called him on July 3 to tell him that she’d just won a $200,000 prize by playing the Lottery’s 10X the Money scratch game, he did not believe her. “I’m kind of a jokester, with the fake ticket and some other things,” said Adams. “He said, ‘I’m busy. I don’t believe you and I don’t have time for this,’” said Adams. “When he called back later, I said, ‘I’m not joking this time!’ He didn’t believe me until he saw the ticket.” Adams thinks that the real $200,000 win more than makes up for the $10,000 joke.

Adams claimed the $200,000 prize at the Lottery’s headquarters in Roseville Tuesday morning, July 8. Holiday Stationstores, located at 233 E. Frazee Street in Detroit Lakes, sold the winning ticket.
