Local Connection To Deadly Accident

Posted: Updated:
Sometimes, bad things happen to good people. A Crookston native recounts what happened to a State Trooper, who stopped to help her on the Fourth of July.

Julie Smith, who lives in Minneapolis now, was headed to a family reunion in southern Minnesota, when her car broke down.

Trooper Scott Reps stopped to help get the car off the road and get a tow truck. She discovered they had family from the same town.

Julie Smith, Minneapolis: “It kind of just touched us that we had that little bit of connection.”

Reporter: “He was a nice guy?”

Smith: “Very nice guy, very helpful.”

Then, just a short time later, Trooper Reps was headed to an accident with lights and siren on. A motorcyclist had been injured after hitting  a deer.

Norman Scott pulled out in front of the Trooper at Cannon Falls. Norman and his wife Geneva Scott were killed. Trooper Scott Reps was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Julie Smith: “It touches you that someone that you connected with that day and a short time after, life changed for him.”

Then, Smith says she reached out to her friends on social media.

Julie Smith: “I just put the article that I found on facebook and then asked my friends to pick him up in prayer.”

A tragic accident that reached far beyond the families involved in it.
