Low Number Of Women In Aviation

Posted: Updated:
"Anyone can do it" is a common phrase used at at Vic's Aircraft Training in Fargo, but what's not so common? Women getting licensed to soar through the skies.
Globally around 4,000 of the 130,000 airline pilots are female, according to the international Society of Women Airline Pilots, and fewer are captains.

She's only spent 5 hours soaring through this North dakota Horizon but it's just the beginning for Stacie Urbach.

"I took off for the first time by myself last week. it was pretty exciting," Urbach said.

Urbach may just be taking off on her journey with flying but she's one of five girls learning out with Vic's Aircraft Training.

"I think it's been such a man's world that women think i shouldn't do that girls don't fly but more power to them," Urbach said.

More power to the most women Vic has ever taught at one time and he says it's something that just shouldn't be.

"Women are very cautious by nature and they become good pilots. they don't take quite as many chances as men do as a rule, they are cautious and listen very well," Vic said.

All perfect traits for a pilot but Vic can understand why the idea of controlling an aircraft like this can keep more women from trying.

"At first it's the fear of the unknown when you first learn to fly but  they get over that fear," Vic said.

On the ground vic teaches his students the ins and outs of the plane but when it comes time to fly, Vic stresses one important thing, learning how to fly by sight.

He just mentioned the other day, I want you to look out and remember all these landscapes because one day you'll be out here by yourself and sometimes your instruments won't always work," Urbach said.

A piece of advice I took to the air as Vic let me give it a try.

It all starts with your first flight, a woman or not, it will make you want to never come down.
