DUI's in Detroit Lakes area top other counties

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT LAKES, M.N. -- Lake goers and vacationers flood the sandy banks every forth. This holiday things got a bit rowdy. The Becker County Sheriff's Office responded to two shootings and one fight.

For first time boat owner Darcy Erickson, safety is a top priority and with a 10-month-old grand-daughter on board, they steer clear of beach boozers and partiers.

"The sand bar can pack up and get pretty wild," said Darcy Erickson. "So, we tend to stay away a little bit from that. It can get really, really busy. We saw it got really heavy with people and we decided to leave."

"I have seen some people drinking, maybe a little bit too much", said vacationer Eric Singer.

And, the Becker County Sheriff's Office agrees. While most of the mayhem happened on the forth they are still inundated with calls.

"Thefts, accidents, motor vehicle accidents, a few accidents on the lake," said Deputy Kathy Nguyen, are typically what they see.

A jet skier even crashed into a dock. Officials told Valley News Live many accidents involve alcohol. It's a combination of pounding booze and tempers rising under the blazing sun which can lead to situations spiraling out of control.

"I'm sure if there wasn't a presence of the Sheriff around we would see more heightened activity," said Erickson.

Being one of the busiest travel holidays in the year, we pulled some numbers. In Becker County 19 were arrested for drinking and driving while a total of 40 have been booked for DUI's, disorderly conduct, shoplifting and domestic violence.

And on the road, Minnesota topped the number of car crashes as well as fatalities compared to other holidays.

Outnumbered by people, deputies say they can sometimes end up in dangerous situations.

"It's always dangerous," said Nguyen. "But, you know, I don't think it's really extra precaution. But, we're always trying to be as safe as we can for ourselves and for the public.

Erickson told us seeing a presence in law enforcement is comforting. For now, she's enjoying the last day in the water before her family hits the long black tar.

We also pulled the number of DUI's in the region over the weekend. In Fargo there were none. But, in Cass County, six people were arrested from driving under the influence and a total of 20 were booked on other charges. In Clay County, there were four and a total of 12 were arrested.
