Horace Man Accused of Sexual Imposition of a Minor

Posted: Updated:
Horace, N.D. -- Wednesday, 71-year-old Lawrence Eugene Lende was arrested for sexual assault against two girls under the age of 15. Valley News Live spoke to some neighbors who have children and told us they were first informed this morning by the park grounds keeper. Now, they have more concerns.

"Completely floors me, I didn't think it would happen here," said neighbor Janice Turchin. Turchin has lived in the Sheyenne Trailer Park for 35-years.

Others who we spoke to including Lawrence Lende's family members, who didn't want to appear on camera, said Lende struggled with alcohol. They said you could typically spot him at a picnic table outside his home drinking. And, if he wasn't there, he'd keep to himself inside.

"We saw him out occasionally," said Turchin. "But, never where he'd be out and about where you actually get a chance to carry on a conversation with him."

Lende was described as being a hermit. He didn't associate with many people.

Turchin has two grandchildren who frequently visit grandma. After what she knows now, she'll keep one eye open when they come to her home.

"God forbid that would happen to them I don't know how I would feel," said Turchin.

Family members of Lende also told us that he suffers from alzheimer's and dementia.

At this point, we don't know how the alleged victims came into contact with Lende. We should find out more when he makes his first court appearance.

Lende is being held in the Cass County Jail and will be formally charged with  gross sexual imposition of a minor.
