UPDATED: Bacteria Found in Jamestown Municipal Water

Posted: Updated:

No Coliform was found in today's testing for the city water in Jamestown.

Additional testing has been ordered for the city water in Jamestown, after the health department found bacteria during two routine checks.

Coliform, the bacteria, does not usually cause illness, but it can spread easily.

Steve Suko with the City of Jamestown Waste Water tells us the water is safe, and residents are not being asked to take an precautions at this time.

He says, "We have the potential to have a problem, we don't have a problem, and that's why we are investigating this if it comes up that we do have a problem the state health department will step in and help us resolve this."

Suko says it is unusual that they have failed two tests at the same site. He says results should be in this week.

Original Story:

People in Jamestown are being asked to start taking precautions after health department tests found bacteria in the municipal water. Jamestown Utility Operations is now notifying people about two bacteria tests failed by the city. The tests were routine and conducted by the North Dakota Health Department. News Dakota first reported the test showed the presence of coliform bacteria samples. Although it doesn't normally cause serious illness, coliform bacteria is easy to culture.

Jamestown residents using the municipal water are asked to start taking precautions, although boiling water is not required.  Valley News Live is in Jamestown today talking with a water treatment plant employee about the bacteria. Following that interview, we will have more detailed information about what residents should be doing.  Check back for updates on this developing story.
