Murder Suspect Gets Life In Prison, Victim's Family Speaks Out

Posted: Updated:
A family is taking its first steps on a long road towards healing after finding out the man responsible for their loved one's death will spend life in prison.

Ward Berg of Moorhead and Samantha Wickenheiser of Fargo were stabbed to death by 36-year-old David Stevens last November.

"Nothing will ever change what he did," John Wickenheiser said.

The Wickenheiser family sat silent in court, reliving the day Samantha was stabbed to death seven months ago.

They broke their silence with tears as they watched her killer get life without parole.

It's the first day the family can start to slowly move forward.

"I don't think there is ever closure but this is a start. But every time you have something go on, a birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day, it doesn't bring her back," John said.

"I didn't know I did it. I didn't know I was capable of doing it. I went into the house and they both screamed and he ran at me. It wasn't something planned," Stevens said before being sentenced.

Since November, Samantha's father John has wanted to speak up for his daughter, but kept quiet in fear of Steven's changing his guilty plea.

John says Stevens is a manipulative man who should not get out of prison.

"He's as far gone as anyone ever should be but unfortunately we didn't see it or else I would have done more to get her away from the situation," John said.

One that left two children, a one-year-old and another just a few months old, left behind without their mother and now a father who will be locked up forever.

"How do you tell them? Even when they're 15? It's going to destroy them," John said.

Like it has destroyed each of them.
