NAPW honors Valerie Crawley-Langston as a 2014 Professional Woman of the Year. Ms. Crawley-Langston is recognized with this prestigious distinction for leadership in INDUSTRY. As the largest, most-recognized organization of women in the country, spanning virtually every industry and profession, the National Association of Professional Women is a powerfully vibrant networking community with over 600,000 members and nearly 300 Local Chapters.
Ive always wanted to be a teacher, says Ms. Crawley-Langton. For 35 years, she has been successfully carrying out her dream to educate children, particularly those who are at-risk, as she teaches English and reading to students in the 11th and 12th grades in the Philadelphia School District.
But this dedicated professional does more than simply teach children how to read and write.I work closely with the Marriott Foundation to help students get jobs, says Ms. Crawley-Langston. From providing the students with clothes to wear to interviews and jobs to teaching interviewing and teamwork skills, she and the foundation volunteers work hard to prepare students for the working world. In addition to helping her students, Ms. Crawley-Langston also enjoys mentoring younger colleagues, advising and guiding them as they embark on their teaching careers.
Although her job does have its challenges, the rewards far outweigh the difficulties, says Ms. Crawley-Langston. She stays in touch with many of her students and often receives invitations from them to important events. This weekend I received four invites from former students to go to mother / daughter teas! I will try to attend them all. Thats what makes this so exciting! she says.
