Restaurant Report Card

Posted: Updated:
It's time for Restaurant Report Card, where we look into recent health inspections for area eateries to let you know who is keeping up to code, and who isn't.

This week, Valley News Team's Mellaney Moore look into three Grand Forks and Fargo restaurants with recent violations.

This week's first stop brought us to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Health inspectors stopped by the Tower Café inside the University's bookstore on June 12 and found one critical and three non-critical violations. Staff wasn't able to comment, but according to the report, a refrigerator that was supposed to be set at 41 degrees or less was found at 44 degrees. The report also says two of the cafe's refrigerators need thermometers and the cafe has some other clean-up to do.

Before leaving Grand Forks, we stopped at KFC on Washington Street. Inspectors came by Kentucky Fried Chicken on June 11, finding two critical and four non-critical violations. In addition to some cleaning, the report says an employee who had been outside smoking came in to work without washing their hands. A manager who didn't want to be on camera told us they have reviewed policies with staff, and the issues have been addressed.

Our last stop is the Applebee's on 45th Street South in Fargo that had one critical and six non-critical violations on June 19th. The restaurant's area director Bret Yaeger says inspectors found a refrigerator that had accidentally been turned to defrost mode. They fixed it and threw away the food inside immediately. Yaeger says they need to "take it up a notch" following their sanitation plans and "aggressively attack" the violations they've had in the past. He says next time, they hope to receive the Valley News Live Clean Plate Award, given to restaurants with flawless inspections.
