Runners and hot wheelers dash to the finish

FARGO, N. D. -- Ready, set, go! Runners and hot wheelers dash down the track to be congratulated by family and friends.

"My whole family's here pretty much," said athlete Tyler Sherpersky.

Hope Incorporated hosted their seventh annual adaptive track meet, giving kids and adults with disabilities an opportunity to be a part of something they don't normally get the chance to try.

Nearly 50 families littered the Cheney Middle School track field to support their athletes. Athletes can partake in 5 different categories: power division, manual, assist, kids that use walkers and kids that can run.

"It's fantastic," said parent Chris Giese. "Kids, these kids don't have the opportunity to do a lot of this stuff."

Hope Inc. provides that opportunity to nearly three dozen kids.

"It keeps him going and it keeps us all involved in sporting activities with him like every able bodied family would be able to do," said mother Brenda Patzner.

And, this year alone eight new families joined in on the fun.

"It's always scary for new families to try something their afraid, that maybe their child can't do this," Hope program organizer Adair Grommesh told Valley News Live. "They get here and a light bulb goes off and they say their child can do this!"

"The enthusiasm for all these events, I mean it's infectious and it gives your kids something, the opportunity to do this stuff," said Giese.

From 60 meters to 90, each athlete has their favorite event.

"Running all the games," said athlete Steven Eltz.

"Distance throwing," Ryan Giese told us.

At the end of the day, every participant is a winner. And, every athlete is rewarded with a medal.

To make Saturday possible it took Hope Incorporation nearly seven months of planning with the help of 10 volunteers.
