NDSU bike share gears up to pedaddle but lacks helmets

Posted: Updated:
FARGO, N.D. -- Pedals are to the metal as NDSU's Great Rides Bike Share is on course and ready to launch a first of its' kind program this fall. Bikes will be available to rent, but helmets are not.

Maintenance ensures the wheels go round.

"Bike safety is definitely important," said NDSU's Board of Director's member Preston Gilderhus.

NDSU plans to launch Great Rides Bike Share next semester, a first for Fargo. Exactly 100 bikes will sit throughout the city at 10 stations where students can rent for a low price. You get the bike but no helmet.

As a child you're always scolded to wear your helmet to protect yourself. That rule still applies to most, even college students.

"It does seem kind of funny that they wouldn't supply it with the rent," said junior James Kossila. "You think they'd be more concerned about general safety."

Bison green bikes are expected to litter the streets this fall and bike experts say throwing on a helmet and buckling up, can help prevent against serious brain injury if in an accident.

"I would never ride my bike without a helmet," said program sponsor Tom Smith at Great Northern Bicycle Co. "We hope that there would be bike share users who'd bring their own helmet."

Great Rides Bike Share is currently accepting bids from local businesses that would take on the responsibility of day-to-day bike operations.

"They would maintain the bikes, bike pressure if the tires were ever to get low," said Gilderhus.

Bikes will also be thoroughly inspected every winter. Come the new school year students just need to swipe their Bison card and they're off.

This program like others, doesn't provide headgear, because of health concerns. But, the bike share is considering working out a fixed price on helmet deals with local shops for students.
