Oil Train Derailment Drill Held By Fargo Responders

Posted: Updated:
Calling December’s fiery oil train derailment a wake-up call, Fargo leaders and emergency responders held a special training session to prepare for a similar event, should it ever happen in the metro.

Today's training scenario involved an oil tanker train crashing into four propane tanks on 7th Avenue North and 15th Street, causing explosions, casualties, and damage near the heart of Fargo.

Fargo's emergency manager says today's training is a good opportunity to test response, because this type of disaster brings a few special challenges.

"In an oil disaster compared to, let's say flooding and our typical events, would be the response,” said Fargo Emergency Services Coordinator, Leon Schlafmann. “Train derailments happen immediately and the response is immediate, so the time of planning and things isn't there."

A similar exercise was also carried in Bismarck today.
