ND Producing 1 Million Barrels of Oil Per Day

Posted: Updated:
North Dakota has joined an elite club in terms of its oil production. Only three other states can boast a level of oil production above one million barrels each day.

Officials announced on Tuesday that the state reached that level in April. The state expected to reach this milestone sometime last year but the industry suffered delays from this past winters harsh conditions.

In 2000, North Dakota produced less than 100,000 barrels of oil per day.

U.S. North Dakota Senator John Hoeven issued a statement saying that we should celebrate and congratulate those who helped get North Dakota to this milestone.

"Reaching the one million barrel a day mark is a tremendous and timely milestone for the petroleum industry and our state, but it is also a tremendous milestone for our nation. If recent events in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine and elsewhere in the world teach us anything, it is that we must build our domestic energy resources and reduce our reliance on Middle Eastern oil to strengthen America's national and economic security," says Hoeven.

Congressman Kevin Cramer said in a statement that it's not just good news for North Dakota but for the entire nation.

"Recent events in Iraq make it clear energy security is more important than ever, and the Williston Basin is the reason we are seeing a reduction in foreign oil dependence. Our state has the solutions to what ails our country, but we are still waiting on the federal government to get on board in many areas including the Keystone XL pipeline," says Cramer.
