Video Update: Store Owner Holds Burglar At Gunpoint For Police

Posted: Updated:
It was a Father’s Day a couple of Red Lake Falls, Minnesota store owners, and an alleged burglar won’t soon forget.  The store owner held a burglar at gunpoint for police.

A 16-year old male has been charged with 1st degree burglary. The suspect is a juvenile, so his name won’t be released.

Just after 2 a.m. Sunday, Kert and VeAnn Wright heard someone in their consignment store, where they live in the basement.  Kert confronted the burglar.

Kert Wright: “Yeah, he turned around, came up over my arm and hit me with a… I didn’t know what at the time. Later I found out it was a flashlight.”

What that would be burglar didn’t count on when he went prowling around Kert Wright’s store, is that Kert Wright had much more than a flashlight in his hand.

Kert Wright: “That’ a 22 semi-automatic Luger. As fast as you pull the trigger it will shoot 10 shots. I grabbed him and threw him down here on the floor. I got on top of him and said don’t you move and I said a few other choice words I shouldn’t repeat.”

Reporter: “He started listening to you then?”

Kert Wright: “Yeah, he definitely was listening to me.”

VeAnn Wright: “I came to the telephone and called 9-1-1 and stayed on there until the cops showed up. They were out in the other room. I could hear him hollering, telling him to sit down.”

Reporter: “Pretty scary ordeal?”

VeAnn Wright: “Yeah, it was. I had a hard time sleeping last night.”

Kert Wright: “Something has got to happen. This is ridiculous for people to start doing this stuff. I hate to say it, but maybe somebody needs to get shot once in awhile. Maybe they’ll stop breaking into people’s houses, because they break into people’s homes quite a bit here.”

Kert says at no time during the ordeal did he put his finger on the trigger of his pistol. He says he felt in control of the situation and did not want to shoot the suspect. However, he’s hoping it sends a clear message to would be burglars at his business.

Again, Kert Wright wants to stress that his finger was never on the pistol’s trigger during the entire ordeal.  He says he just never felt the burglary suspect was a big threat.

ORIGINAL STORY:
Another would be burglar has picked the wrong business to hit.   Kert and VeAnn Wright found a burglar in their business,  "Wright's Consignment Store" in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, which is also their home, early Sunday morning.

Kert Wright says the burglar struck him in the head with a flashlight. However, Wright had a gun and held the burglar at gunpoint until police arrived on the scene and arrested him.
