Cheerleading now an official sport by AMA

Posted: Updated:
Grand Forks, N.D. -- Acrobatic spirals, flips and lifts - the Red River Valley Girls Cheer and Gymnastics Team flies in the air. Due to risk and serious injury associated with the activity, the American Medical Association says cheerleading should be considered a sport.

The AMA met monday in Chicago and added cheerleading to the official sports list. Now, this means more safety measures including proper training for coaches.

"There's always a risk with any sport but cheerleading...you know, you're flying through the air, you got to rely on your friends and your teammates to catch you when you're falling," said Cheer Coach Haley Bina. "And, when something could go wrong, you have to really have a lot of trust in your friends."

AMA members say cheerleading is as rigorous as numerous other sports played at a high school and college level.

The sport holds the leading cause for major injury in female athletes.
