Earthen Levee Planned for North Fargo

Posted: Updated:
Some people in a flood-prone north Fargo neighborhood could soon be seeing some relief in the form of a permanent dike. Work is expected to start next spring on an earthen levee and flood walls around El Zagal golf course.

The levee means more home buyouts along the Red River. Six homes along 14th Avenue will be bought out and a portion of the avenue that connects to Elm Street will be closed permanently. Engineers will meet with affected homeowners in coming weeks.

The project is designed to protect homes in the area, but not the golf course.
El Zagal will lose about four acres of land, so city engineers are working with the Fargo Park District on the project. The plan includes a total re-design of the course and a new clubhouse. El Zagal Golf Course will close for a year during the reconstruction.

The earthen levee will cost about $1 million dollars and will be built on the the north, west and south sides of the golf course.
