Island Park Pool Opens Monday, Be Aware Of Pool Safety

Posted: Updated:
The Fargo Park District is hoping for some nicer weather over the next couple of days. The outdoor pools at Island Park are officially open for the season on Monday.

We all know what drowning is but secondary drowning is not as well known. It happens after a near drowning experience.

When someone is underwater struggling for air, and water gets sucked up into the lungs. That's when they could be at risk of secondary drowning. Children often go in and out of consciousness. But, upwards of 48 hours after inhaling that water, it can be deadly.

"it's a very rare case, secondary drowning is very rare, but it is always good to be vigilant with your kids and if they go underwater, just watch them afterwards, nine time out of ten they are going to bounce back and go right back on the board again," says Nicole Bartholomay, the assistant pool manager at Island Park Pools.

As parent you should look for the warning signs. If your child is coughing or having a hard time breathing for an extended period of time after getting out of the pool. You should seek help.
