Fargo VA Says an Average Wait at Their Facility is About 17 Days

Posted: Updated:
After a national discussion regarding wait times for veterans at VA hospitals, an internal audit at Fargo's VA revealed decent results compared to other hospitals. The audit showed an average wait of 17 days for a veteran. Some people still see a long road ahead to get veterans the adequate care they need and deserve.

"I wasn't able to get in for four days and I had pneumonia that was undiagnosed. I had it for four days and I went to a private provider and paid out of my own pocket to get in," says a retired member of the military that lives in the F-M region who wished to remain anonymous.

Senator John Hoeven hosted an open forum this afternoon in Fargo. Stating that one of his gravest concerns is that veterans are traveling too far to get top of the line service in Fargo. The senator says he would like to push for legislation to get more non VA hospitals to offer care for vets.

"We want to make sure that when a veteran needs care they can get it here. There's not a wait time or situation where it's not available. Or if it occurs, they can find service from another health care provider," says Sen. John Hoeven.

Fargo's VA hospital is nearly at full staff. Officials add that as the state continues to grow in population, their demand for personal care also is steadily climbing. They do however plan on hiring a master scheduler to ensure that they give the best care possible in the most appropriate time frame.
