It’s quickly become one the most popular campgrounds in the upper Midwest, drawing more than 100-thousand visitors a year. Ironically, it was  created by the flood of 1997. It's the Red River Recreation Area in downtown East Grand Forks and it may be the perfect spot for your quick, inexpensive family getaway this summer.

The homes in this area were destroyed by the flood of 97. However, since it’s been converted into a campground, the Red River Valley Recreation area has been become a favorite of all kinds of campers.

…whether they’re in a tent or 300-thousand dollar RV., some say it’s one of the best campgrounds in the Country.

Dannealle Misson, Camper: “Now we have 7 States left. And out of all those campgrounds that we have visited, this one has the nicest layout.”

This campground sits just off Highway 2, a favorite route for Canadians traveling the northern U.S.. Plus, downtown East Grand Forks bars, restaurants and shops are just a block away.

Michelle Nack, Camper: “It’s like being in the forest and having a lot of privacy, because there’s a lot of room.”

Reporter: “It’s not too far to get back to reality either?”

Nack: “No. We just walked to dinner last night. It was great.”

Plus the park is connected to miles and miles of walking and biking trails along the river.

Catherine Johnson, Red River Recreation Area: “We had 26-thousand campers and over 110-thousand visitors last year. A lot of people come in here to fish also. There’s some good fishing spots.”

So, if you’re looking for a camping trip with a little something for everyone, you might want to check out this campground in downtown, East Grand Forks.
