Strangers Traveling Country Helping Local Family

Posted: Updated:
Complete strangers are helping a local family with an 8-month-old girl in need of a heart transplant.

Earlier this month a family from Casselton found out their daughter has a serious heart problem. Leaving the family in a tough financial situation they couldn't prepare for.

Days go by while Joanie Carey is not able to hold her own daughter, "She is so tiny and helpless, and I am sure she's scared,” she says, "It kills you. It absolutely kills you, and I can't be there. I can't be there holding my baby's hand."

A heart breaking story, stumbled upon by an unusual group of teens. They approached the girl's mom, telling her they are traveling the country, helping people in need.

"They just need to be worried about spending time with their little girl, and so we want to just wipe away that worry, and just love on her," says Alicia Zieg. She’s part of a group called Dare You To Move. It’s made up of four girls, 18 and 19 years old. One is from California, and the others are from Oregon. They are traveling around the country helping strangers.

"Casselton was one of the ones we have never heard of, ever, and so we found out it was a super small town. But, we were like, okay god has sent us here for some reason," says Alicia, “People think that we are crazy, and we are, but we are crazy about loving people.”

They came to Casselton on Wednesday, and walked into Community for Care, a non-profit helping people in rural Cass County.

And it just so happened that Joanie called the very same non-profit just minutes before the girls walked in.

"I get this phone call ten minutes later, and she's like, you are not going to believe what just happened, these people just walked in my door, and just asked the question," says Joanie.

They asked if they could raise the $40,000 dollars this family needs. By setting up sites online, and through social media. The answer was obvious. Joanie was so grateful, "I have no other words than that, it's a miracle, absolutely,” she says.

This is the girls' 4th stop around the country. They are stopping in 30 cities total.

Thursday they are hitting the road to do the same for another family.
