(KARE 11 TV)  ST. PAUL -- A new initiative that aims to get students active in school was launched on Tuesday.

Moving Matters is a comprehensive approach which includes 30 minutes of gym time, active games in the classrooms and activities for kids when they're not in school.

Minnesota Education Commissioner Dr. Brenda Cassellius said Moving Matters is a team effort. "There's been a lot of support from the teachers and the administration as well as the school administrators and the health and wellness folks, parents even coming in and working which is really great to see that partnership with the parents," she said.

Officials said physical activity can help students achieve academic success.

Moving Matters was created by Active Schools Minnesota, a partnership between the state education and health departments.
