Most Minnesotans believe that being healthy comes down to personal decisions but acknowledge that there are obstacles in their way. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota launched a new campaign called "Pulling Together Minnesota." It is aiming to help Minnesotans live a healthier lifestyle.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota lists 7 obstacles that stop Minnesotans from making healthier choices.

"We know that many Minnesotans face barriers such as not being able to walk or bike to school or finding their communities not to be walk-able or bike-able as they would like," says Blue Cross and Blue Shield spokesperson Stacy Housman.

55% of Minnesotans felt it was difficult to get affordable fresh fruits and vegetables.

"It has gotten really expensive, they need to drop the price somehow but its impossible," says Moorhead resident Adebbe Shahin.

"I think it is expensive here to buy organic foods and food that are good for you and the family," says Dilworth resident Carol Mattern.

The "Partnership 4 Health" organization which includes Becker, Clay, Ottertail and Wilkin counties is helping promote healthy affordable options for food like growing a community garden or attending a farmers market.

"Some of the things we're focusing on is making sure we're increasing the fruit and veggie intake in schools through farm to school programs and looking at the community as well like access to farmers markets community gardens and trying to increase education on local foods," says Partnership 4 Health educator Keely Ihry.

The "Pulling Together Minnesota" campaign is trying to encourage people to ask for their communities for the changes they need for a healthy lifestyle.

"We know the kind of changes that are most powerful and sustainable in communities is when multiple sectors private, government and community organization all come together and work together," says Housman.
