Becker Co. hoping to repair Detroit Lakes boat tram

Posted: Updated:
A Detroit Lakes boat tram that passes hundreds of boats to and from Lake Sallie and Muskrat Lake was closed down for this holiday weekend.

Becker County commissioners say the tram is in need of thousands of dollars in repairs, and those who live on the lake use it frequently.

"We've done that several times and it's kind of cool, I mean you know you get on that tram and you go into Muskrat and then you go through the channel into Lake Detroit," says Jim Bond, who lives on Lake Sallie.

But the tram, which is used by several hundred water craft a season, is down and needs some work.
"A few pulleys need to be rebuilt, a new cable needs to be purchased and just a little update to get it in operation for this year," says Becker County Commission Service Chairman John Okeson.
Becker County commissioners are thinking it will cost $6,000-$7,000. The county does have some money budgeted and hopes that with some help, they'll have the tram running in the next few weeks.

"Hopefully we'll see some other funds probably from private sector or other governmental entities coming in to help the county out," says Okeson.
So water travelers here are hoping it is up and running soon.
"It's one of those things, it's been around a long time and it would be very sad to see it not running. It's part of life at the lakes," says Bond.

The repairs to this tram are a temporary fix- the Commission says they'd like to replace the tram with a new one in three to four years.
