A scare this morning at a Moorhead school is turning into a lesson for everyone involved. Horizon Middle School went into lock down around 11:30 a.m. for almost an hour after a student reported an attempted abduction.

"She was aware enough to go tell someone right away, that, you know, that was wrong," says Rhonda Rice, a parent with a daughter at Horizon Middle School.

It started when the kids were outside for gym class. The girl says she was playing inside a gated area when a man walking down the sidewalk allegedly tried to lure her out.

"There was a fence between them, and she states that the male began to climb the fence. At that point she screamed at him, and at that point he ran away from the school," says Deric Swenson with the Moorhead Police.

"She reported that to the classroom teacher, she reported that to the office, then to law enforcement, and at that point the school went into lock down," says Dan Bacon, Moorhead Schools Property Manager.

"The school did what was right, they had the best interest of the students in mind," says Swenson.

"Of course I thought about all the weird things that have been happening in other schools in the country. I just thought it was really smart for the girl to go quickly. Obviously she would have told someone right away," says Rice.

The parents we spoke to say they will be having a conversation with their children.
But, some parents say you shouldn't let this scare your kids.

"You don't want to keep pounding this into them, that this could happen every day that they go to school," says parent Steve Wettstein.

Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident. Police, teachers, and parents agree that this is a learning experience.

"Talk to their students about safety when walking home, when walking to school, reporting things that look suspicious to them," says Swenson.

"Don't talk to anybody. If you are on your bike, and someone stops you or calls you over, keep going," says Rice.

During the lock down police searched for the man, but they determined no one ever entered the building. They are still investigating, and the school officials say they are going to revisit the situation and see if any protocols need to be changed.
