Community Pulls Together for Man Battling Skin Cancer

Posted: Updated:
Friends are gathering Wednesday evening to host a benefit for a West Fargo to help with growing expenses from his battle with cancer.

The benefit for Jerry Liska is happening on Wednesday, May 21 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The benefit will include a free will offering baked potato supper with all the toppings, a silent auction and raffle boards.

Jerry’s battle with cancer began in December 2008 when he was diagnosed with merkel cell carcinoma, a rare skin cancer. Following surgery in 2009 to remove a tumor from his hand, he underwent radiation treatment and the cancer went into remission. In November 2013 he was re-diagnosed with the same cancer, but this time it had metastasized to his liver. Jerry is currently undergoing an intense chemotherapy treatment.

Some of the items you can bid on at Wednesday's benefit are an autographed NDSU Bison 2013 Team Football, Gift baskets, Spa day, custom made games, a Marlin 22 cal. rifle, a West Acres gift card, a Scheels gift card, and a handmade quilt, just to name a few. To support Jerry, head to the Blessed Sacrament Church located at 210 5th Avenue West in West Fargo.

Jerry worked a long career in the Bricklayers Union, and later independently, as a mason, retiring when he was diagnosed with cancer. Jerry and Isabel are members of Blessed Sacrament church where Jerry sings in the choir and Isabel helps with many parish events. They have three grown children. In his spare time Jerry loves to garden and fish.

Lend-A-Hand, a program of Dakota Medical Foundation, is providing up to $5,000 of matching funds to provide more help for the family.
