Survey: Close to Half of Americans Can't Swim

Posted: Updated:
Swimming pools and lakes will be busy this weekend with Memorial Day outings. It may be a good time to brush up on your swimming skills because a new survey finds many Americans aren't as strong in the water as they should be.

It takes one slip off of a boat, one step in the wrong direction along the edge of the pool, to become submerged.

Connie Harvey is a Water Safety Expert with the American Red Cross, and says many people may not have the swimming ability that they think they might have.

A new poll from the American Red Cross finds that while a majority of people feel confident they they can swim, only half of those surveyed have the skill set necessary to get out of a body of water if they find themselves in over their head.

Harvey says adults should be able to be able to float or tread water for about a minute.

"Then be able to turn yourself so you can orient to a position of safety then you swim at least 25 yards and then get out of the water," says Harvey.

Parents said just about 4 in 10 kids have those skills, though more than 90% will be in the water at some point this summer.

While most associate swim lessons with kids, adult classes are also available, you can visit this link to find one close to you.
