The North Dakota State baseball team (21-22, 9-10 Summit) opened a four-game Summit League series with a 4-2 win over league rival South Dakota State (25-26, 9-10 Summit) Thursday, May 15, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Tim Colwellwent 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI to lead the NDSU offense while six other Bison also each recorded a hit in the game.
Right-handerDavid Ernstwent seven-and two-thirds innings on the mound for the Bison to earn the victory, allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out four and walking four, improving his overall record on the season to 4-4.
RelieverTrevor Jaunichpitched one-and-one-third innings, allowing no hits, runs or earned runs while walking one and striking out one to tally his team-high sixth save of the season.
The Jackrabbits Scott Splett and Eric Danforth each tallied a RBI to pace South Dakota State offensively.
SDSU pitcher Adam Bray pitched five innings and surrendered three runs, all earned, on five hits while walking three and striking out three to suffer the loss on the mound and drop his record to 5-6 overall.
The Bison scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead. The Bison lead grew to 3-0 after Colwell was able to score on a South Dakota State wild pitch.
SDSU answered and sliced the NDSU lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Splett scored Cody Sharrow on a groundout for SDSU's opening run and Danforth batted in Aaron Machbitz on a double to plate SDSU's second score of the inning.
NDSU pushed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a Colwell RBI single to right field that allowed Leach to score his second run of the game.
With runners on first and third and two outs in the top of the eighth, Jaunich entered the game and induced a fly-out from Jackrabbit pinch-hitter Paul Jacobson to end the threat. The Delano, Minn., native recorded the final three outs for NDSU in the ninth to seal the Bison victory.
With the win, NDSU improves to 21-22 overall and 9-10 in Summit League play while SDSU falls to 25-26 and 9-10 in league action.
The Bison and Jackrabbits are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday, May 16, at Newman Outdoor Field beginning at 1 p.m. before closing out the series and regular season Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.
